The Center for Health Equity (CHE) provided technical assistance to the Latino Family Center and Casa San Jose, in developing a needs assessment of the Latino community living in Allegheny County. CHE supported these organizations by helping them identify and select an appropriate methodology. Working collectively with the organizations, CHE selected the Fuerza Unida model from Casa de Esperanza in Minnesota, which emphasizes community engagement and leadership development, and focuses in dreams and hopes as well as necessities. Using Fuerza Unida as a model, CHE drafted the protocols, instruments and tools to be utilized, incorporating the expectations from the leading organizations. Before the start of data collection, CHE trained community and staff members in data collection techniques and the specific protocols for this project, and assisted the organizations with recruitment efforts. When data collection finished, CHE helped with the analysis of the data and drafting of the final report. This is an example of the commitment of the CHE with communities in our region.
